The United States of Europe: The New Superpower And The End Of American Supremacy by
T.R.. Reid examines the emergence of the European Union and its implications for America.
He begins with scenes from a popular Eurotelevision program that bashes American culture, an apparently
widespread diversion across the pond. The author then proceeds in a step-by-step comparative
analysis of the political, economic, and social institutions of Europe vis-a-vis the
United States of America. It provides some interesting insights and criticisms of both governments
and their practices, though clearly Mr. Reid finds the European way to be superior in many respects.

The book is somewhat weak on documentation; the seven items in the “Notes” section do little
to amend this weakness. Also, the author ignores some very important factors in his analysis.
He characterizes American citizens and policymakers as being blind to what is going on in Europe, but he omits the role
of the powerful angliophile network that has been working diligently behind the scenes to bring about his beloved new
“superstate”, and of the subservient media this network controls. Names such as Edward Mandell House, David Rockefeller,
Richard N. Gardner, and Zbigniew Brzezinski are curiously absent, though each played a significant part in this
“spontaneous” growth of European solidarity. Mr. Reid is apparently unconcerned that the two World Wars that served as
the impetus for a union in Europe were orchestrated for that very purpose. He also fails to acknowledge that the EU is
but a temporary, transitional entity on the road to global government as envisioned by House, Rockefeller, Gardner,
Brezezinski, et.al. The author glosses over the overtly Marxist nature of what Mikhail Gorbachev has referred to
as the "new European Soviet.” Mr. Reid correctly points out that Europe could not enjoy its self-serving welfare state
without the support and defense provided by America, that this Eurocentric “workers paradise” was built on the backs
of the American taxpayer.

Considering these omissions and the highly anecdotal nature of the discussion, The United States Of Europe
is of limited value in understanding the EU and its ramifications for America..

T.R. Reid is a bureau chief for The Washington Post and the author of several books.
